Q & A – with Lizzie and Adam Ross co-owners and managers of Kinross

Located in the heart of the Gibbston wine growing area Kinross is the ideal escape any time of the year offering quality accommodation, food, wine and hospitality.

What are the key attributes that set Kinross apart? – Like all our Gibbston neighbours, we have a massive passion for what we do and enjoy making people happy. Being a Boutique Vineyard Hotel, Cellar Door and Bistro we are well on our way to creating Kinross as a unique destination amongst the vines.

How has Kinross evolved since you have been at the helm? – The past two years have been a whirlwind. We are lucky to have found an excellent team and have expanded our facilities to include a conference/ events space for up to 50 guests, firmly established ourselves as a bistro and have recently increased its capacity. The grounds have been extensively developed and we are also operating as clean and green as possible which is an important focus.

Who is the Kinross target market? – We have created a social space with everyone in mind. Our wine garden is now fully kitted out with outdoor heaters and the daddy of all outdoor fires which maintains a cosy atmosphere on winter days. Situated on 16 hectares Kinross is a welcoming place for locals and visitors, including children and dogs.

What local wines can be sampled and enjoyed at Kinross? – We are the official Cellar Door for our five outstanding partners – Coal Pit, Domaine Thomson, Hawkshead, Valli and Wild Irishman and in the coming months we will be launching our own Kinross label. This includes a special Pinot Gris and in conjunction with winemaking pioneer, Alan Brady of Wild Irishman, we are producing a Kinross Single Vineyard Pinot Noir.

How have you successfully married Gibbston wines with locally sourced foods in the kitchen? – We have come a long way from opening our kitchen doors two-and-a-half years ago and have aligned our food to the same quality of the wines we serve. We use locally sourced products where possible and grow vegetables, herbs and fruits in our gardens and orchard. We pair all our foods with wines that can be sampled at Kinross and integrate the wines into the food. Our menu changes with the seasons to offer the ultimate in fresh produce.

What type of experience does Kinross offer for people wanting to stay at the vineyard? – We currently have 14 studio cottage rooms nestled in the vines and offer a range of additional services including beautician/ masseuse (in winter), hot tub, fitness classes, petanque and a range of different events throughout the year. We also welcome groups for retreats and conferences. Kinross is the perfect venue for people looking to spend quality time together.

How far is Kinross from Queenstown and Wanaka ski areas? – We are open seven days a week and just 45 minutes from all the ski areas. It’s the perfect escape away from the hustle and bustle and gives our guests the chance to experience great wine and delicious food
