Hailing the Sheepskin Revolution

Wilson & Dorset in Wānaka is on a mission to rid homes of synthetics.

Co-founded by Amanda Dorset and Ben Wilson the luxury sheepskin brand crafts products made from ethically sourced New Zealand sheepskin designed to last a lifetime and the company has an established world-wide following for their sumptuous homely range that includes the popular Wilson & Dorset Sheepskin Shaggy Bean Bags, designer floor rugs and dynamic stacked floor cushions.

“Each year, the majority of lamb and sheep pelts from the meat industry go into landfill,” says Amanda. “Because they are a natural product they will decompose back to the earth but we believe in extending the life of these skins and using them to make high- quality products for the home.”

“Synthetic cushions, rugs and furniture require a lot of energy to make and are often made from petrochemicals. It is hard to tell at the outset how these materials will fare against the everyday rough and tumble of the home environment and all too often they break or deteriorate and are left to fill up landfill.”

Wilson & Dorset recently opened a store in Arrowtown – sister to their Wānka Helwick Street concept store – in Cowies Cottage historic mining cottage in Buckingham Street.

“We are excited to bring the Wilson & Dorset experience to Arrowtown allowing people to explore the colours and piles first hand while our team helps customers to discover the perfect piece to take home,” says Amanda.”

“Sheepskin, like its shorn counterpart wool is a wonder fibre. Road tested over the last 100,000 years it’s list of benefits is seemingly endless.”

Benefits of Sheepskin

Antimicrobial

Sheepskins are naturally antimicrobial and hypoallergenic as the fibres contain lanolin which is a naturally occurring wax that is both anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.

Thermoregulatory

Sheepskin’s insulating properties trap warm air providing a cosy and inviting environment in winter while its breathable structure aided by moisture-absorbing abilities work keep you cool and dry in summer.

Fire resistant

A tanned sheepskin is resistant to a short-time exposure to fire with temperatures up to 200°C.

Hydrophobic

Naturally occurring lanolin on the fibre creates a protective barrier preventing water from penetrating deep into the fibres. This means the wool resists soiling and releases dirt easily making it naturally dirt repellent.

Biodegradable

At the end of its useful life sheepskin will naturally decompose over a six-month period.

Long lasting

Treated with basic care Wilson & Dorset products will endure a lifetime of family wear and tear.
